The past 24 hours: Yesterday morning’s anticyclonic gloom gradually lifted by the middle of the day with the cloud dispersing allowing weak sunshine. However, haze persisted and visibility remained only moderate. More cloudy overnight although with breaks allowing a sharp ground frost to develop.

Virtually no lying snow or ice remaining. Ground no longer frozen but flood plain saturated on pools of water lying on the surface. River Rea flowing at almost bankfull. Cloud: Nimbostratus. Base low at approx 300m. Visibility: Moderate, 6000m. Air temperatures: Current 3.0°C; Maximum (past 24 hours) 4.8°C (highest of year so far); Minimum (past 24 hours) 1.0°C (which was the value at yesterday morning’s observation time. Minimum overnight temperature was 2.6°C, the highest of the year so far). Overnight grass minimum temperature: 2.1°C (again, highest of the year so far). Rainfall total for past 24 hours: 11.9mm, nearly all of which has fallen since 04hGMT today. Wind direction from: S. Mean wind speed 14km/h Force 3 with gusts to 20km/h Force 4. Wind chill effective temperature MINUS 1°C. Pressure: 1003mb. Falling from 1014mb over past 13 hours. The past 24 hours: One word sums it up – THAW. This as the Atlantic influence from the west has become increasingly dominant with the passage of frontal systems eastwards. Cloudy throughout.

Cloud: Nimbostratus. Base very low at approx 150m. Visibility: Poor; mist, 3500m. Miniumum temperature was the value at yesterday morning’s observation time. Minimum overnight temperature was 0.4°C. Overnight grass minimum temperature: MINUS 0.1°C. Wind chill effective temperature MINUS 2°C. The past 24 hours: A slight breaking of the cloud cover during the middle of the day yesterday but otherwise remaining overcast throughout the period. Yesterday morning’s fog thinning to mist. A gradual thaw of lying snow through most of the period and thaw becoming more rapid with today’s rain. Area of frontal rainfall arrived from west at 07hGMT today heralding the end of the recent spell of wintry weather and the return of the Atlantic influence.

The past 24 hours: Periods light snowfall throughout the period although becoming of moderate intensity for a few hours around midnight. Frequently, especially during the day, the precipitation was almost turning to rain. This was the first recording period without frost since the 24 hours ending 09:15GMT on 31st Dec 2009. A gradual thaw of lying snow and ice has taken place although cover remains extensive and was added to by last night’s fresh snowfall (and additional 3cm to 4cm accumulation).

Overnight grass minimum temperature: MINUS 1.5°C (but probably lower as grass minimum thermometers were not put out until gone midnight by which time air temperature had risen to fractionally above 0°C). Wind chill effective temperature MINUS 2°C. Rainfall equivalent total for past 24 hours: TRACE. The past 24 hours: Periods light snowfall throughout the period. The lowest temperature was at time of observation yesterday morning. Temperature rose to a max of MINUS 1°C during the day, falling below freezing again after sunset, then gradually rising through the rest of the night so that the maximum value has occurred very recently. However, this trend is not predicted to continue.

With maximum temperature only just above freezing and a very cold breeze only a little thawing of lying snow occurred. Becoming extremely cold overnight.

Visibility: Very poor with mist and falling snow; 1800m. Wind chill effective temperature MINUS 5°C. The past 24 hours: Light snow started falling at approx 09:30GMT yesterday morning. Intensity soon became moderate and for a short time heavy, giving a widespread surface accumulation of 3cm to 4cm depth. Snow became lighter and intermittent from late morning until early evening and a slight thaw took place between 12hGMT and 18hGMT. Temperature dipped below freezing after then and a period of moderate to heavy snowfall occurred between 18hGMT and 21hGMT, increasing the surface accumulation by several cm. Snow continued for the remainder of the period, generally light and intermittent.
