Frequently, especially during the day, the precipitation was almost turning to rain. This was the first recording period without frost since the 24 hours ending 09:15GMT on 31st Dec 2009. A gradual thaw of lying snow and ice has taken place although cover remains extensive and was added to by last night’s fresh snowfall (and additional 3cm to 4cm accumulation).

Intensity soon became moderate and for a short time heavy, giving a widespread surface accumulation of 3cm to 4cm depth. Snow became lighter and intermittent from late morning until early evening and a slight thaw took place between 12hGMT and 18hGMT. Temperature dipped below freezing after then and a period of moderate to heavy snowfall occurred between 18hGMT and 21hGMT, increasing the surface accumulation by several cm. Snow continued for the remainder of the period, generally light and intermittent.
